Research Background

On this research, we examine water some different points in the city. We'll share the knowledge how to check water quality by using simple visible kit which is easy by an amature to a sample. At first we'll have an orientation in April 2015. Student & citizen volunteers will get the tequnique, then we'll start the examination for water quality at different points in the city & in different conditions through a year. The city has an old cultural town in the center, a frequent flooding area, brakish area, rice field etc.. So We'll collect water at 5 public wells in different places & 4 points of Thu Bon river & the surrounding of the trash disposal site to examine. At the end of this research activity, we'll have a report meeting at 2 places, U Cafe & National University of Danang & publish the result & our opinion. Until now the policy for the hygiene of the city government tended to be delayed. But we are sure clean water for citizens is a matter of utmost importance. Proving the result, we'll share & cooperate with the local governments & citizens to search the way how to access the clean water by citizens. [Sep. 2014]

Final Report (abstract)


We have been checking water quality at 5 wells & 11 points of rivers in Hoi An City. Hoi An City is located in the Thu Bon estuary. This river has plural deltas & belongs to blackish water region. The gap between the ebb and flow of it is quite large, so it glows a lot of mangrove forests. It abounds in fishery resources for us. On the other hands, measures for conservation of environment by the government can't catch up with the population upsurge, for ex. underdeveloped collection of garbage system, citizenship lessons for trash separation etc. A lot of people throw their residential waste into the river. As a result, in the dry season on the plural rivers there are a lot of floating dust with a wicked stench. Almost all the well water is undrinkable level now, citizens take boiled city-water or bottled drinking water. Well water is still very important to support the lives of the citizens even it has become undrinkable. We intended to improve this situation & started our project' water quality check 2015 ( here in after: WQC) by the donated grant from The Takagi Fund for Citizen Science.

The WQC project was held as follows:
- Once in every two months, 5 times a year
- By a reagent kit, Kyoritsu Chemical-Check Lab., Corp..
- With volunteer students in Truong Cao Dang Bach Khoa Da Nang (Danang University of Science & Technology), Dai Hoc Su Pham Da Nang (Danang University of Education)
- WQC components: COD(COD-D),BOD,NH4,NO3,PO4-(C&D),TN-i
Numerical data of one year WQC are not a lot. But the result of it shows us some interesting unexpected facts.

About WQC for wells:
- Knowledge of citizens by their experience is correct that water of almost all the wells of the wells are undrinkable level unfortunately.
- Water level of some wells were quite low in the beginning of the dry season. But we couldn't find the reason.
About WQC for river points:
- At almost all the points result of WQC water quality is lower than water in wells.
- Unexpectedly, there's no particular difference between water quality in dry season & rainy season.
- Also no particular water level difference between in dry season & rainy season. Water level difference is by the day of moon phases.
- Influence of the flood-tide: When the survey was just after the new moon, floating objects, pollution & bad smell were increasing. Result data were also different. I presume that it had an influence by the moon phase. From the next year's WQC we should set up of measurement conditions in fresh water or in estuarine water circulation.

Getting results above, we concluded WQC 2015. Accompanied by population upsurge, a river point which water being clean relatively at the first WQC, got foul odor in the last WQC. Every participants of WQC 2015 were not a little shocked by deterioration in the water and started the second year's WQC.
Into an estuary, water flow speed drops down & sand & organic matter accumulate around it. Degradate causes odor. But on the other hand, it brings up aquatic living things. We retain this two sides of the important role water quality in our mind.
Future task of the society hereafter are as follows.
- Reducing a total amount of garbage is necessary.
- Environment management should be tightened for garbage, water pollution industrial waste.
- Enlightenment of citizens for environmental protection.

U Cafe from now:
We intend to continue WQC as follows.
- Investigation activity for water quality & garbage.
- Education to young students for water quality management & rubbish treatment.
We have started to work jointly these activities above with NGO's & students who're interested in environment protection & water management. We will start to Children education on water quality & environment protection.
