Research Background

Objective: The action research aims to initiate activities with goals to reduce risk of exposure to chemical contamination and induce social restoration in a community affected by industrial waste pollution in Nampu subdistrict, Muang district, Ratchaburi province, Thailand. It also aims to push government agencies to take real actions in restoring the environment of Nampu, Ratchaburi, and in the long run, campaign for legal reforms that will ensure environmental restoration and compensation are available to communities impacted by pollution. Background: Since 2001, the Nampu community has been affected by an industrial waste recycling and landfill factory called Wax Garbage Recycle Center. The major impact had been the leakage of wastewater, leading to the contamination of local environment by dangerous chemicals such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and heavy metal. The locals sued the company in 2017 and won in 2020. But while the court verdict orders the company to compensate locals and restore the environment, the entire process stagnated between 2020-2022. Action:The action research supports the Nampu community to use phytoremediation to reduce their exposure to chemicals. This means using plants to absorb pollutants. This research is conducted with a clear understanding that phytoremediation will not restore the environment so severely contaminated. However, it is meant to help reduce exposure (even if by a small extent) to chemicals among communities, and to provide monitoring of local environment. Most importantly, the activity helps maintain social fabric in Nampu community, which since their court victory had been stricken by disillusionment towards a justice system that could not give them environmental restoration. By creating a channel for communal activities, the project wishes to expand the literatures on environmental restoration, by further exploring the notion of social restoration. The research also aims to push for environmental restoration, in particular by using the community's action as a beacon to attract interest of government agencies and the media. All in all, it aims to push government agencies to take action, by showing that locals have not abandoned the issue. In the long-run, this will provide a starting point for a larger social conversation on legal reforms in Thailand to ensure availability of environmental restoration in Thailand. [Sep. 2022]
